Buyer - Pharmacy

Job Summary:  The Pharmacy Buyer is responsible for coordinating all purchasing and inventory control for the Pharmacy Department.  This individual will be responsible for the oversight of all tasks related to daily ordering including software use, regulatory compliance, order system development/maintenance, physical inventories, audit procedures, and initiatives as assigned.  Works under the direct supervision of the Pharmacy Director in accordance with standard departmental procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Understands nature of item purchased and can find multiple sources using existing vendors, contract portfolios and the internet.
  • Obtains comparable pricing for items from multiple sources and perform pricing analysis.
  • Seeks to reduce costs whenever possible, making recommendations and showing initiative.
  • Leads physical inventory counts as directed.
  • Shows understanding of inventory principles and stock levels and how a buyer seeks to balance risk and supply in par leveled areas.
  • Masters all systems relating to product procurement and inventory control.
  • Assists in maintaining compliance and maximizing the benefit of the 340B Program.
  • Oversees the daily ordering of Pharmacy inventory to maintain appropriate levels of medications.
  • Coordinates with external vendors to ensure consistent supply of pharmaceutical products.
  • Maintains current list of drug shortages and develops alternative plans for purchase.
  • Oversees all processes relating to interdepartmental billing, including reporting.
  • Ensures the safeguarding, storing and accurate handling of all medications including USP standards.
  • Ensures proper utilization of time, equipment, and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications:  High school diploma or equivalent, national certification (PTCB), and State of Michigan pharmacy technician license are required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  Familiar with the 340B program and Microsoft Office applications, able to multitask appropriately and to work accurately under stress. Possesses strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with personnel and visitors.  Able to operate multiple computer programs, troubleshoot, and resolve system issues; must have strong organizational skills.

Working Conditions: May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.  Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required in sterile areas.

Physical Requirements: Constantly stand, walk, reach, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear, lift/carry 1 to 25 lbs.  Frequently push/pull, bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch, lift/carry 25 to 49 lbs.  Occasionally lift/carry 50+ lbs.
