Unit Secretary Oncology Casual

Job Summary:   The Unit Secretary handles the administrative duties within the office and performs clerical duties to maintain an organized healthcare office and allow medical staff to focus on patient care. He or she also maintains a line of communication between the patient and clinical staff and provides accurate and timely insurance verification of eligibility and benefits.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Registers patients.
  • Administers and maintain patient records.
  • Breaks down medical charts for record keeping and coordinates billing.
  • Communicates with the clinical staff to ensure all appropriate patient information is gathered.
  • Answers phones, makes copies, schedules appointments and maintains supplies.
  • Obtains insurance information, registers patient for services and obtains required pre-authorization and/or notification information for all services verified.
  • Accurately gathers information and inputs data in all phases of the registration process.
  • Registers patients in a timely fashion.
  • Assures that the patient or guardian, as outlined by procedure, signs all the appropriate paperwork. Assures all patients are offered Oaklawn Privacy Practices and the Patient Rights and Responsibilities brochure.
  • Verifies all appropriate insurance coverage.
  • Obtains and scans patient driver’s license and insurance cards as applicable.
  • Handles patient inquiries promptly and appropriately.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Working knowledge of English grammar. High school diploma or equivalent and one year related experience required, or a comensurate combination of education and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:   Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to deal effectively and courteously with a diverse group of patients, doctors, internal callers and other healthcare personnel, while maintaining strict medical ethics. Must possess the ability to type at an acceptable speed and accuracy rate and understand oral and written directions. Medical terminology and secretarial experience is preferable. Word processing experience is also preferred.

 

Working Conditions:  Must work in a busy office and public environment while maintaining a friendly demeanor during all interactions with diverse populations of physicians, nurses, patient family members, etc.  Potential exposure to blood/body fluids and contagious disease.

 

Physical Requirements:  Constantly sit, reach, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear, lift/carry 1 to 25 lbs.  Frequently push/pull, lift/carry 25 to 49 lbs.
