Director, Emergency Services

Job Summary:

Responsible for overall operations of the Emergency Department under the administrative direction of the Chief Nursing Officer. The Nurse Director leads unit operations and maintains 24/7 accountability for outcomes.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Plans, coordinates and directs unit functions
  • Oversees quality improvement activities
  • Meets all regulatory standards
  • Collaborates with staff and Unit Based Council in establishing departmental goals that align with the organization’s strategic plan
  • Hires and evaluates staff
  • Coaches and mentor’s staff to reach predefined goals and expectations
  • Works both with individuals and within a shared governance structure to meet the unit’s vision, strategic, financial, clinical, and operational goals
  • Successfully works with diverse team of stakeholders including physicians, multiple levels of professional and technical staff members, community members etc.
  • Assists with planning for fiscal and budget plan years.
  • Achieves top decile patient satisfaction.
  • Maintains involvement in patient care environment.
  • Functions as the Trauma Program Director

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Graduate of an accredited Nursing program with current Michigan license. BLS, ACLS, PALS and TNCC within six (6) months of hire. Five (5) years Emergency Nursing experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:   Master’s in nursing and previous leadership experience preferred. CEN preferred. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills; strong coaching and mentoring aptitude; an appreciative inquiry and relationship based care based focus; skillful advocate for patients and staff. Highly developed analytical and organizational skills; flexible; skillful use of research/evidence based; patient safety orientation; comfort/skill with end of life issues and bioethics; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; lifelong learning orientation; strong vision of nursing and patient care.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Work in an unpredictable environment encountering stressful situations and exposure to body fluids and infectious diseases. Ability to continuously stand and walk (90% of time); ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds; repeated stooping; hear spoken words and assessment findings such as heart tones; vision to include differentiating increments on syringes, pupil sizes, skin color and rashes. May experience traumatic situations including deceased patients.
