EMS Education & Community Programs Faculty

SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Education & Community Programs Manager, adjunct faculty for MedStar’s Education programs will provide the expertise and knowledge that support the program curriculum and programs. Establish courses following accepted higher education standards. Teach students using a variety of effective methodologies and provide engagement and support activities that encourage student learning. The role of the Adjunct Faculty encompasses teaching and learning, academic advising, professional development and institutional and community service.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Teaching:

  • Demonstrate skill and/or knowledge in teaching discipline
  • Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods.
  • Adhere to established standards for educational quality, to include following program administration guidelines in accordance with the sponsor program administration manual.
  • Assess student performance and progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop and use a syllabus for each course or laboratory within program, discipline, and departmental guidelines.
  • Plan, develop, and use a variety of teaching methods and materials that assist students in meeting course objectives and which are appropriate for students with differing educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives and inform them of their progress in the course in a timely manner.
  • Keep accurate student records and submit related reports and forms within requested timelines.
  • Teach courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs.
  • Demonstrate competence and interest in the use of technology in the classroom and willingness to explore new instructional methodologies.
  • Develop continuing education programs, with lesson plans and other educational materials for classroom delivery and content for on-line.
  • Stays current on changes, updates and research in the EMS career field and education
  • Assist in the development of multimedia presentations.

 

Academic Advising:

  • Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community.
  • Provide access to students through electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
  • Provide advice and assistance to students regarding instructional or program-specific issues.

 

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Air conditioned office environment
  • Occasionally: Extreme hot and cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise, vibration, mechanical and electrical equipment, moving objects, high places, dirt and dust, blood, tissue. Frequently works alone, with and around others, face to face and verbal contact, inside and outside temperature changes.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Sit for extended periods of time

  • Simple grasping and fine manipulation
  • Extended keyboarding
  • Occasionally smelling, lifting up to 70 lbs, pushing, pulling, typing (30 wpm), climbing, balancing, carrying no more than 70 pounds, kneeling, stooping, bending, leaning, upper and lower body flexibility. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Associate’s degree in emergency medical services management, business administration, or other related degree, or equivalent experience
  • Current Texas Department of State Health Services or National Registry Paramedic certification (if only NRP, Texas must be obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • Two years of instructional experience in EMS career field
  • Maintain Texas EMS Instructor or NAEMSE Instructor Level 1 certifications
  • Instructor certifications for ACLS, CPR, PALS, PHTLS, AMLS, EPC etc.), or obtained within 6 months of hire
  • Knowledge of EMS theory, practice, and trends
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operational procedures
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills
  • Familiarity with basic computer applications, Microsoft Excel, Word, Publisher, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Internal Candidates: Has not been clinically de-credentialed in the last 12 months
  • Internal Candidates: No active improvement plan in place
  • Must not have been excluded by the OIG to Participate in Federally Funded Heath Care Programs

 

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • More than five years or more experience as a paramedic or EMT in a high-performance 911 system
  • Bachelor’s degree in emergency medical services management, business administration, or other related degree, or equivalent experience
  • Texas Department of State Health Services Basic or Advanced Course Coordinator Certification

Previous experience instructing EMT, EMT-P, and Critical Care courses
