Radiology Technologist

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, provides radiological examines for patients.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Performs radiological testing according to Department procedures.
  • Proficient in use of all radiological equipment.
  • Reviews and evaluates digital x-rays, video tape, or computer-generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. 
  • Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff. 
  • Explains procedures and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan.
  • Operates or oversees operation of radiological equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes. 
  • Positions and immobilizes patient on examining table. 
  • Positions imaging equipment and adjusts controls to set exposure time and distance, according to specification of examination. 
  • Keys commands and data into computer to document and specify scan sequences, adjust transmitters and receivers, or photograph certain images. 
  • Monitors video display of area being scanned and adjusts density or contrast to improve picture quality. 
  • Monitors patients' conditions and reactions, reporting abnormal signs to physician.
  • Sets up examination rooms, ensuring that all necessary equipment is ready. 
  • Prepares and administers oral or injected contrast media to patients. 
  • Takes thorough and accurate patient medical histories. 
  • Records, processes and maintains patient data and treatment records, and prepare reports. 
  • Demonstrates new equipment, procedures, and techniques to staff, and provides technical assistance. 
  • Provides assistance with such tasks as dressing and changing to seriously ill, injured, or disabled patients. 
  • Measures thickness of section to be radiographed, using instruments similar to measuring tapes. 
  • Operates fluoroscope to aid physician to view and guide wire or catheter through blood vessels to area of interest.

Minimum Qualifications:  An Associate’s Degree in X-ray Technology or related field.  Registered or registry eligible by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), and certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:   Knowledge of radiological equipment and techniques, radiation safety, anatomy/physiology and disease process and quality control in a Radiology Department. Must demonstrate competency in administration of all contrast media and barium. Incumbent should be skilled in interpersonal relationships, monitoring patient responses, assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands and operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications. Some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional specific technical certifications.

Working Conditions: May occasionally be exposed to infectious diseases and/or hazardous materials.  Frequent exposure to radiation in a controlled protective setting.

Physical Requirements:     Constantly walk, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, bend/twist, talk/hear.  Frequently stand, reach, push/pull, stoop/kneel/crouch, lift/carry 50+ lbs.
