Clinical Practice Coordinator - Education

SUMMARY:

The incumbent is responsible for developing and advancing the quality of clinical practice through the provision and coordination of the training and continuing education activities of the Office of the Medical Director (OMD) / Emergency Physicians Advisory Board (EPAB) of the Metropolitan Area EMS Authority (MAEMSA) system.

 

This position requires the skills to be an effective leader and the ability to inspire individuals by communicating needed changes, motivating individuals to become active participating members of a team, and encouraging self-development through a leadership example approach. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the OMD team to ensure that the System goals are achieved in accordance with the mission and vision of OMD/EPAB and the MAEMSA.

 

SPECIAL NOTE:  This job has been designated as a Safety Sensitive Position by MedStar. Public safety, as well as the safety of MedStar employees, requires that the employee in this position be able to perform all essential functions at the highest levels at all times.  Therefore, this position is subject to frequent drug testing and requires reporting of all employee use of High Risk Medications identified by MedStar and certification from the employee’s physician that such medications can be safely used while working.  Because MedStar’s ability to deliver emergency medical response depends on having a workforce that can be reliably scheduled, this job also requires regular and reliable attendance.  This is a high-stress job that requires focus, engagement, and high performance in traumatic, physically demanding, emotionally charged, and life-threatening situations.  The position involves exposure to serious and graphic injury to adults and children, including death and dismemberment.  A high level of physical, mental, and emotional health is an essential requirement.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage Continuing Education (CE) activity development, implementation and evaluation for the Metropolitan Area EMS Authority.
  • Oversee conduction of card course program offered by OMD in accordance with the regulatory body.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained in accordance with the regulatory body.
  • Maintain appropriate physical and mental health required to perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Provide on-call coverage for On-line Protocol Guidance.
  • Ensure regular and timely physical attendance during assigned work hours.
  • Perform overtime work required in emergencies and as otherwise directed or assigned by the Medical Director or designee.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Manage records and tracks employee compliance with all required education and courses.
  • Coordinate with healthcare partners in community outreach education and EMS education initiatives.
  • Work closely with the QA/QI Coordinator to develop continuing education programs that address issues identified through the QA/QI process.
  • Act as an educational resource for Field Operations personnel and Field Training Officers.
  • Evaluate learner performance, provides feedback, and develops learner remediation plans.
  • Stay current on changes, updates, and research in EMS.
  • Collaborate with co-workers peers and others to develop innovative educational programs designed to meet the needs of the EMS community and EMS providers.
  • Participate in activities that promote the MAEMSA.
  • Write test questions with rationales and administer exams.
  • Assist with the New Employee Orientation Program with instructing and evaluating of new hires.
  • Assist with evaluating all new hires and transitional employees in all phases of the training process.
  • Assist with coordination of Field Training Officers and FTO program (ongoing training and development).
  • Assist with the validation of tests and test questions on a regular basis.
  • Assist in the development of multimedia presentations.
  • Assist with other OMD responsibilities and projects as assigned by the Medical Director or designee.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasionally: Confined areas, extreme hot and cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise, vibration, mechanical and electrical equipment, moving objects, high places, fumes/odors/mists, dirt and dust, gasses, toxic conditions, human excrement, blood, urine, mucous, tissue. Frequently works alone, with and around others, face to face and verbal contact, inside and outside temperature changes. Work hours may vary due to office needs

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Constantly seeing. Frequently hearing/listening, clear speech, touching, walking inside and outside, sitting.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years as an Advanced Paramedic in the MedStar system or at least five years’ experience as a paramedic in a busy 911 system.
  • Advanced credentialing requirement.
  • One year of instructional experience in EMS career field.
  • Texas Department of State Health Services EMS Instructor certification, or must obtain within 1 year of date of hire.
  • Relevant instructor card certifications (CPR, ALS, PALS, Trauma, Medical, etc.).
  • Knowledge of EMS theory, practice, and trends.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operational procedures.
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of competency based educational principles and methods.
  • Adherence to established standards for educational quality.
  • High level of integrity and objectivity in performance review of clinical care and the ability to provide constructive feedback.
  • Familiarity with basic computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Appropriate time management to ensure that all areas of essential functions are adequately covered.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with online Learning Management Systems.
  • No Corrective Action within the last 12 months
  • No exclusion by the OIG to participate in Federally Funded Heath Care Programs.

 

PREFERRED REQUIRMENTS:

  • Associate’s degree in emergency medical services management, business administration, or other related degree, or equivalent experience
  • Five or more years’ experience as a paramedic in a busy 911 system.
  • Previous experience coordinating and instructing EMT, EMT-P, and Critical Care courses.
  • Texas Basic or Advanced Course Coordinator certification.
