Nurse Director - Surgical Services

Job Summary:  Provides leadership for and assumes 24 hour responsibility for the operations of the Surgical Services Department (Inpatient, OR, Pre-op, OPS, PACU and CSP).  Provides safe and highly reliable processes in a relationship centered environment. Directs and develops staff; collaborates with all disciplines, individuals and departments.  Values and maintains departmental process improvement.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Establish an environment conducive to providing relationship centered care, evidence based practice, shared governance/leadership and staff engagement
  • Manages time effectively and efficiently
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing staff development through assisting the OR Educator to provide in-services, continuing staff education, competencies, and orientation
  • Provides coaching, mentoring support and consultation to managers, colleagues, and staff; serves as a role model in professional behavior and leadership, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Oversees departmental and hospital process improvement products including timely collection of data, analysis, recommendations for improvement and evaluation of outcomes
  • Facilitates reviews, and approves all budgetary operations of the department including annual budgeting, daily operational budgets, and supply budgets. Participates in strategic planning and development of practices to achieve objectives and correction of performances variances; Provides and implements process to provide cost effective quality care
  • Establishes, maintains and promotes active participation in the hiring process through peer interviews, feedback and structured orientation
  • Ensures compliance with DNV, CMS, AHCA and applicable agencies (local, state and federal)
  • Upholds AORN Standards and recommended practices.
  • Supports and engages in LEAN initiatives, LEAN processes, visual management, supports operation of department policies and procedures and other operational matters
  • Achieves financial objectives in salary and non-salary budget areas; makes budgetary recommendations for capital, equipment and human resources
  • Supporting/coordinating use of the EHR by staff including: achievement of regulatory requirements, patient safety and quality efforts, work to maximize EHR functionality, efficiency and support of nursing workflow
  • Coordinates clinical and non-clinical activities of the department including Main OR, PACU, Pre/Post, PAT and CSP.
  • Delegates authority and accountability to staff for clinical nursing practice and patient care decisions that are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies and organizational policies and procedures
  • Identifies patient and family needs of populations served; recommends and develops programs and serves to meet those needs, assures age specific care and resources are available
  • Serves on committees in nursing, hospital-wide or professional nursing organizations; develops agendas in collaboration with surgery section chief and attends administrative section meetings quarterly
  • Collaborates with Oaklawn Hospital Senior Leadership and physicians to identify future opportunities and define direction of Surgical Services; develop and implement plans to achieve identified goals including OR efficiency, productivity, and patient through put across the perioperative continuum
  • Actively and professionally resolves patient care issues, questions, concerns, and complaints
  • Assure scheduling of staff to meet staffing standards; timely completion of payroll

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Unrestricted Michigan Nursing License; CNOR & BLS certifications; 10 years surgical services experience as an RN including both circulating and scrubbing; 5 years of progressive leadership experience

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  MSN preferred; Current principles, techniques, policies and procedures of nursing practice and theory and management; Health care practices, procedures, terminology and technology as they relate to nursing and surgery; expert knowledge of current clinical nursing standards of care in the OR and through the organization; principles and practices of effective management, supervision and leadership; ability to think out of the box to problem solve; highly organized, reliable, resilient, and accountable; great interpersonal skills, ability to lead by example, and manage stressful situation with grace and integrity; competent in Cerner, Surginet, EHR, Word and Excel

 

Working Conditions:  Potential exposure to infectious disease and blood and body fluids.

 

Physical Requirements:   Constantly see/visual acuity, talk/hear.  Frequently stand, sit, walk, reach, handle/grasp/feel, bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch.  Occasionally lift 1 to 49 lbs.
