Risk Manager

Job Summary: The Risk Manager oversees the risk management program by coordinating clinical and administrative activities required to identify, evaluate, and reduce the risk of injury to patients, employees, visitors, and other healthcare workers, and the risk of loss to the organization. Provides and supports systems for monitoring and evaluating all aspects of physical safety and maintaining an environment free of hazards posing undue risk while coordinating processes involved in managing general liability and risk exposures. Supports the development and implementation of system-wide patient safety objectives and initiatives to maintain compliance with applicable regulations and standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Manages internal risk management program in accordance with federal, state, and regulatory requirements, including activities related to risk prevention, medical error reduction, and compliance with unanticipated outcomes. 
  • As part of the quality team, develops and implements facility wide programs supporting safety, performance improvement, and proactive risk management.
  • Collaborates with Patient Advocate to Support Patient/Family Grievance Program and complaint database and ensures compliance with federal program requirements.
  • Demonstrates effective and supportive communication in all situations promoting professionalism and collaboration with key stakeholders, including peers, patients, providers, leadership, and external contacts through the development of strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Utilizes effective communication and teaching skills to report trends and to educate the hospital and medical staff on issues related to risk management and/or patient safety.
  • Provides annual education and just in time feedback for employees, leaders, and medical staff.
  • Provides consultation and mentoring for aspects of risk management and patient safety to leaders, staff, and healthcare providers/medical staff.
  • Develops and revises pertinent policies and procedures for area(s) of responsibility for conformance with ethical principles and adherence to applicable regulation. 
  • Maintains and optimizes organization-wide event reporting system.   
  • Supports activities related to data collection, data review, analysis, reporting, and dissemination of risk management and patient safety information to appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manages the entirety of the claim management process including correspondence review and response, responds to professional liability and facility liability questions as a subject matter expert, release of information and records in response to subpoena, court orders, attorney requests, notification of third-party administrators of all actual and potential claims and legal interface as indicated.
  • Promotes compliance with federal acts and regulations such as Patient Self-Determination Act, Safe Medical Devices Act (SMDA), Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), and compliance with specific event reporting requirements, such as child abuse, domestic violence, etc. 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in the healthcare-related field. Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS) on hire or earned within one (1) year of hire. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) on hire or earned within one (1) year of hire. Three (3) years of healthcare experience in risk, patient safety, or quality.

Preferred Qualifications: Clinical experience as a registered nurse. Master's degree in a healthcare related field. Data/ statistical analysis experience. Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS). Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).   

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytic skills. Demonstrates practical verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to persuade and negotiate. Proven problem solving, critical thinking and process skills to perform in a self-directed manner within a team-focused framework. Experience with accreditation and CMS surveys. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products and knowledge of database and statistical analysis methodologies and programs. Experience in organizing and facilitating Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and critical incident reviews.

Working Conditions: Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available. Requires on-site presence and making rounds in the hospital and medical group facilities routinely and as need arises.

Physical Requirements: Constantly see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear, taste/smell.   Frequently sit. Occasionally lift/carry 1 to 50+ lbs.
