Job Summary: The RN will provide basic nursing services during the regular school year to students enrolled in schools located within the School’s district.

Essential Functions:

• Provides direct nursing care in the school to students through full implementation of the nursing process and professional standards of care.
• Completes all required documentation in a timely manner per department policy.
• Maintains a safe and risk-free environment for students, their families and others.
• Participates in school and system-wide continuous quality improvement activities.
• Collaborates with the team to implement policies, procedures, quality improvement activities specific to school nursing.
• Recognizes the importance of building partnerships with members of Oaklawn and the school district.
• Follows the policies, procedures and protocols set by Oaklawn for the Community School Nursing Program.
• Promotes and maintains healthy attitudes and lifestyles in school-aged children and appraise health status of school-aged children.
  • Provides students with access to school nursing services
  • Develops health care plans and protocols for students requiring accommodations including case management participation as needed (i.e.: IEPs)
  • Assesses health needs of the school community
  • Identify and engage community resources to meet increasing health care needs of students
  • Administer/oversee medications and vaccines including monitoring and promoting immunization compliance through school and family contacts.
  • Assist with identification of high-risk indicators in school-aged children with chronic illness.
  • Assist teachers with implementation of established health education plans and teach designated staff/faculty to monitor and respond to health needs of children with chronic illness.
  • Delivers emergency care and provide first aid updates
  • Plans presentations to promote health
  • Provides education, problem identification and referrals for dental health.
  • Trains, monitor and evaluate nursing students pursuant to guidelines and procedures developed by the agency and the district
  • Supports students, parents, and teachers regarding health needs.
  • Serves as a resource/referral person for school, home, private physicians, health organizations and social agencies regarding health needs of students
  • Provides the school administration with a summary report regarding services provided.
  • Helps prevent and control infectious diseases in the school setting
  • Reinforces proper techniques that prevent spread of infectious disease and provides information to students and parents on how diseases are transmitted.
  • Makes various “fact sheets” available as teaching tools for staff and families
  • Provides information to school staff regarding control of communicable diseases and serve as a resource during communicable disease outbreaks within school systems.

Minimum Qualifications: Successful completion of a program in nursing.  Current licensure in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse. BLS certification. One (1) year of recent clinical experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  BSN preferred.  Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience in the school setting preferred.  Experience with implementation of nursing skills and treatments as ordered by a provider and/or in congruence with standing protocols, use of specialized equipment, and ability to monitor student response to treatment.  Understands anatomy/physiology of disease process and student assessment protocols.  Effective interpersonal skills in all areas of communication with strong oral communication skills.  Able to work independently and capable of solving problems with theoretical and practical approaches using good judgment.  Able to work in a self-directed and collaborative environment. Strong clinical, organizational, documentation and teaching skills.  Cultural sensitivity to students from a variety of backgrounds. Knowledge of federal and state regulations for school district. Personal accountability for continuous growth and development. Creates a caring experience for staff, students, and families.  Committed to continuous improvement for customers, including safety, quality of care and excellent service, and gives high priority to student and family satisfaction.

Working Conditions:  Primarily works in a clean, well lit, air-controlled area, not under any extreme conditions. Able to work around moderate noise levels in an office environment. Potential exposure to infectious disease.

Physical Requirements:  Constantly see/visual acuity, talk/hear.  Frequently stand, sit, walk, reach, push/pull, handle/grasp/feel, bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch, taste/smell, lift/carry 1 to 50+ lbs.
