Director, Quality, Safety & Risk- Quality Improvement - Full time/Exempt- Weekdays

Job Summary: In collaboration with the CMO, the Director, Quality, Safety & Risk creates, executes, and continually evaluates a clear vision for an effective quality and safety culture utilizing systems-based thinking to prevent patient harm while improving patient care delivery. Demonstrates a commitment to advancing healthcare quality and safety and minimizing risk by focusing on outcomes measurement, efficiencies, increased capacity, and provision of safe, timely, cost-effective, patient-centered care. The Director facilitates a culture of high reliability and data-driven performance excellence. Accountable for the direction and implementation of enterprise activities and programs in regulatory and accreditation compliance, patient experience, quality improvement, outcome measurement, infection prevention, safety, risk management, and data analytics.  

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Supports the development and execution of short- and long-range enterprise strategic plans for quality, safety, performance improvement, and risk management. 
  • Coordinates the annual review of Oaklawn Quality Management System and associated plans
  • Serves as an enterprise-wide resource for the measurement and analysis of clinical performance, the patient experience, performance improvement, and documentation and data issues.
  • Coordinates activities and resource allocation to support public reporting of Oaklawn’s performance information and assures accuracy and integrity of data.
  • Supports collaboration with analytics and the IS team to maintain clinical documentation integrity in the electronic patient records.
  • Maintains a familiarity with internal, regulatory, and other external documentation, coding and data standards and regulations, and the changes with those standards and regulations; establishes mechanisms to correct areas of non-compliance with applicable standards
  • Collaborates with providers, leadership and all departments across the organization to further the goals and objectives of the organization and ensure attainment of operational as well as organizational strategic goals. 
  • Chairs, serves on or provides administrative support related to quality, safety, risk and the patient experience for identified committees, including compilation and dissemination of information and reports as indicated.  
  • Supports, coordinates and manages identified pay for performance initiatives and associated activities.   
  • Provides administrative direction for the areas of direct responsibility, including the establishment of goals and operating objectives which align with the strategic plan, and preparation and management of annual operating and capital budgets for the department.  Monitors monthly expenditure reports to assess budget status and reports on variances; may develop, recommend, implement and monitor contracts for services.
  • Develops and manages staffing plan and provides evaluations, coaching, mentoring and counseling as appropriate.  Develops individual development plans for employee growth and engagement.

Minimum Qualifications: RN with valid MI license. BSN/MSN or BSN with Master’s Degree in related field or willingness to obtain Master’s within two years of hire. Five (5) years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in an integrated healthcare system with expertise in clinical quality management, performance excellence, patient safety, patient experience, and risk management.   

Preferred Qualifications:  Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS), Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong understanding of operational workflow analysis and improvement tools such as Lean Six Sigma. Ability to function in a participatory management environment to identify and resolve problems, develop plans, objectives, and strategies. Ability to develop, prioritize, and accomplish multiple goals; strong demonstration of project management discipline and ability to manage competing demands on departmental and personal time and resources. Ability to analyze and evaluate data to drive appropriate decisions/recommendations; and to enhance the information value stream; Ability to teach and coach Quality Improvement methods and disciplines; strong communication and interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism in dealing with physicians and staff at all levels of the organization. Ability to develop and lead cross-functional teams to facilitate and drive excellence across the continuum of care.  

Working Conditions:  Work is generally performed within an office environment with standard office equipment. Will routinely make rounds in the hospital and potentially off-campus sites, which may pose some risk of exposure.

Physical Requirements:  Constantly see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear. Frequently sit, bend/twist. Occasionally lift/carry 1 to 49 lbs.
