Activity Therapist Aide

Job Summary: Responsible within the Psychiatric Department for ensuring professional service to the patients, hospital staff and hospital departments in accordance with policies set forth by Oaklawn. Coordinates recreation and leisure activities with patients and completion of evaluations and activity therapy assessments under the supervision of the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. May provide occasional coverage for other disciplines or as unit needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Plans, organizes, develops, implements and evaluates therapeutic recreation and leisure education programs for patients; determines, organizes and coordinates daily program activities that meet patients’ needs and interests.
  • Conducts leisure education assessments; with active client participation, develops and implements detailed leisure education plans, goals and objectives for participants; monitors individual clients’ progress; writes progress notes and reports.
  • Plans treatment sessions for individuals and groups to improve physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral functioning and independence in life activities.
  • Assesses and participates in determining program equipment, supply and materials needs; within budget guidelines and necessary management approval, purchases equipment and supplies; distributes or supervises distribution of equipment and supplies; maintains inventory of supplies.

Minimum Qualifications: Handle with Care Basic certification in nonverbal and physical management within two (2) months of hire and annual re-certification.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Two (2) years of recent experience in a hospital or mental health setting.

Working Conditions: Potentially exposed to infectious diseases.

Physical Requirements:  Constantly sit, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear, lift/carry 1 to 25 lbs.  Frequently stand, walk, reach, bend/twist, and lift/carry 25 to 49 lbs.  Occasionally lift/carry 50+ lbs.
