Registered Respiratory Therapist

Job Summary: Provides respiratory care for patients under supervision of a physician and by prescription.  Processes HME purchases and rentals and enters information into the computer system.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Reads prescription and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment.
  • Sets up and operates devices such as PAP devices, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, nebulizer and aerosol generators.
  • Assists patient in performing breathing exercises.
  • Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy.
  • Consults with Physician in event of adverse reactions.
  • Maintains patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy and billing information.
  • Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently. Orders repairs when needed.  Cleans and disinfects equipment and work space.
  • Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel.
  • Utilizes pertinent software for downloads from PAP devices to assess compliance and efficacy of therapy.
  • Maintains a safe environment for customers and other staff.
  • Participates in quality/performance improvement activities as needed.
  • Participates in educational programs.

Minimum Qualifications:  Must possess the level of education usually associated with the completion of a curriculum from an approved school for respiratory therapy.  Current State of Michigan Respiratory Care Practitioner license.  Six (6) months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education or experience as a licensed respiratory therapist. 

  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:   Evident in use of respiratory modalities, techniques, use of equipment, and is able to monitor patient response to treatment.  Understands anatomy/physiology of disease process and patient assessment protocols. Recognizes importance of building partnerships with all members of the health care team and exhibits behavior that displays teamwork, professionalism, and respect for diversity.  Must have effective interpersonal skills in all areas of communication with strong oral communication skills. Able to work independently and be capable of solving problems using good judgment.  Able to maintain client confidentiality.  Able to read, analyze, and interpret manuals, technical procedures, and policies and procedures.  Able to operate a computer using a variety of software applications.  Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from peers, clients, customers, and the general public.  Able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and other forms. Able to assess and prioritize multiple tasks and demands.  Able to work in a self-directed and collaborative environment, and meet deadlines with a high degree of accuracy.

Working Conditions:  May occasionally be exposed to hazardous materials or infectious diseases.  On Call availability as needed after hours, weekends, holidays.

Physical Requirements:  Constantly see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear.  Frequently stand, sit, walk, reach, bend/twist.  Occasionally lift/carry 1 to 49 lbs.
