Vascular Access/ Radiology RN

Job Summary:  Coordinates vascular access program including placement of PICC and peripheral lines, performance improvement initiatives, and development of staff RN proficiency in vascular access and intravenous therapy skills. Assists Radiologist during invasive procedures including pt VS, continuous monitoring, med administration and post procedure assessment.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates vascular access program; develops policies and procedures
  • General vascular access; and oversees intravenous therapy quality initiatives
  • Assess patients for appropriateness for PICC’s, places PICC’s, provides daily rounds and follow-up. 
  • Places peripheral lines, especially in hard to access patients in all patient care areas.
  • Provides nursing care and monitoring to patients undergoing dobutamine stress tests and invasive radiology procedures.
  • Develops databases on vascular access and radiology program; tracks and analyzes performance data related to central lines. 
  • Collaborates with Infection Control and others to maintain standards and initiate process improvements on CLABSI prevention.
  • Provides education to patients regarding PICC’s and radiology procedures.  
  • Provides orientation and continuing education for nursing staff regarding IV standards, IV access and IV therapy. 
  • Continuous learning including review of latest research/evidence and standards around vascular access and IV therapy. 
  • Serves as a consultant and mentors nursing staff in overall development. 
  • Develops a team of back up vascular access RN’s.
  • Seek opportunities to exercise fiscal responsibility and cut costs in areas of expertise while continuing or improving quality.
  • Collaborates with physicians and assists them in issues related to vascular access, IV therapy and radiology procedures. 
  • Uses general nursing knowledge and skill to support patients/patient care directly and indirectly.

Minimum Qualifications:  Current unrestricted Michigan Registered Nurse license.  BSN or in process.  Current PICC certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  Certification in specialty desirable (VA-BC or CRNI). Strong nursing clinical background required, along with knowledge of current nursing standards and practices.  Recent experience with successful PICC placement necessary, along with strong proficiency with general vascular access.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, analytical abilities and integrity. Able to motivate others; strong teamwork and relationship building.  Self-directed, flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with evolving roles and juggling multiple priorities.  Experience with implementing successful changes including performance improvement initiatives.  Patient education proficiency, and understanding of principles of adult learning. Current computer proficiency necessary, including comfort with electronic medical records.  Basic skills with Word and Excel. 

Working Conditions:  Work in an unpredictable environment encountering stressful situations and exposure to body fluids and infectious diseases.  May experience traumatic situations including deceased patients.

Physical Requirements:  Constantly walk, see/visual acuity, talk/hear.  Frequently stand, reach, push/pull, handle/grasp/feel, bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch, lift/carry 1 to 50+ lbs.
