Laboratory Aide

 Job Summary: Laboratory aides assist the Director by performing venipuncture on inpatients and outpatients, processing send-over specimens and general cleaning of the lab. They also perform a variety of other tasks as needed in medical or clinical settings.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Performs venipuncture on outpatients and inpatients as assigned.
  • Assumes clerical duties in absence of Laboratory Assistant.
  • Answers the phone, greets customers and pulls appropriate orders
  • Requests orders from providers, Call critical results and files orders
  • Assures that the patient or guardian, as outlined by procedure, signs all appropriate paperwork.
  • Assures a payable diagnosis for all Medicare restricted tests or obtains an ABN from the patient if    applicable
  • Accurately enters testing into LIS from requisition
  • Recognizes and solves problems by identifying the cause, synthesizing alternatives, determining solutions and implementing the solution.
    Inventories, stocks, and cleans all blood drawing booths/trays.
  • Accurately processes send-over specimens.
    Assists with maintenance on refrigerators and washes all glassware, test for detergent residue.
  • Specimen processing to include send-out testing.

Minimum Qualifications:  High school diploma

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:   Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions. Must have basic computer skills.   Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, and procedure manuals.  Exceptional interpersonal skills including cheerfully greeting customers (out-patients) and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, able to work under pressure, and able to multi-task. Proper use of phone etiquette is necessary. Must be able to present oneself positively with professionalism demonstrated thru written and verbal word. Skills for problem solving either individually or as part of a team. Phlebotomy skills preferred.

Working Conditions:  Work with potentially infectious blood/body fluid and hazardous material in a controlled protective setting.

Physical Requirements:  Constantly stand, walk, reach, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch, talk/hear, lift/carry 1 to 25 lbs.
