Licensed Practical Nurse

Job Summary:  To perform the direct and indirect nursing care of an assigned group of patients under the direction of a Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatrist as assigned by the Psychological Services Department.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Determine the nursing needs of assigned patients. Notifies Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatrist in charge of any pertinent physical or emotional findings. Reports and documents abnormalities or instability of patient’s condition in a timely manner.
  • Evaluates patient care and notifies Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatrist  in charge of feedback received from physicians, patients and families as proven by documentation on nurses’ notes.
  • Assists in meeting patients’ physical and emotional needs and carrying out physician orders under the direction of a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Explains and educates all treatments and medications ordered to the patients.
  • Performs activities of daily living as needed for patients.
  • Ensures appropriate completion of necessary documents, electronic documentation and patient education.
  • Monitors patient condition and maintains accurate timely documentation.
  • Maintains vigilance over patients, ensuring necessary safety precautions are taken.
  • Performs therapeutic nursing procedures in a safe and efficient manner within the specified scope of practice.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.  Current licensure by the State of Michigan Board of Nursing.  BLS required. Completion of Handle with Care Basic Certification in physical and nonverbal patient management within two months of hire and annual re-certification.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:. Knowledge of nursing techniques, procedures, practices, medical terminology, and of infection control measures. Psychiatric Nursing experience is preferred.  Ability to follow detailed oral or written instructions; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Demonstrated ability to provide nursing care to patients, plus ability to monitor the work of others.  

 

Working Conditions:  The exposure to potential violence at times.

 

Physical Requirements:  Constantly stand, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear, lift/carry 1 to 25 lbs.  Frequently sit, walk.  Occasionally lift/carry 25 to 49 lbs.
