Physical Therapy Assistant

Job Summary:  Responsible for providing direct physical therapy patient care in accordance with physicians orders and as assigned by the Physical Therapist.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Performs physical therapy treatments for patients in their homes according to the PTA assignment as designated by the licensed Physical Therapist. 
  • Follows the plan of care and communicates with the physical therapist when changes are needed or discharge should be considered.
  • Home therapy may include but not be limited to the following modalities: establishment of home exercise programs, use of progressive theraband, theraputy, weights, pulleys, balance board, restorator, electric stimulator, ultrasound, massage, hot and cold treatments
  • Maintains and completes accurate documentation and reports for all assigned patients.
  • Communicates with other members of the health care team to keep them updated.
  • Creates a caring experience for both internal and external customers.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Current license to practice as a Physical Therapy Assistant in the State of Michigan and BCLS certification.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  One year of recent experience in physical therapy services and one year experience in a home health or hospice setting preferred. Evident in implementation of physical therapy skills and treatments as ordered by a physician in the plan of care, use of specialized equipment, and ability to monitor patient response to treatment. Skilled in strengthening, stretching, range of motion, therapeutic exercises, muscle re-education, ADL retraining and compensatory techniques, perceptual motor training, neuro-developmental treatment, sensory treatment, obtaining and training in use of appropriate DME and adaptic equipment, prosthetic training, gait training - weight bearing and non-weight bearing, instruction in use of therapy modalities, back care and exercises, joint mobilization techniques, transfer training, bed mobility, fine motor coordination.  Effective interpersonal and strong communication skills..  Able to work independently and capable of solving problems with theoretical and practical approaches using good judgment. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Ability to work in a self-directed and collaborative environment.  Must exhibit strong clinical, organizational, documentation and teaching skills.  Demonstrates cultural sensitivity to work with patients from a variety of cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. Working knowledge of federal and state regulations for homecare.  Able to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands and meet deadlines with a high degree of accuracy.  Demonstrates personal accountability for own continuous growth and development and seeks out appropriate learning opportunities to enhance competency and improve performance. Creates a caring experience for both internal and external customers, is courteous and respectful, anticipates and responds to customer needs. Committed to continuous improvement for customers which includes safety, quality of care and excellent service, and gives high priority to customer satisfaction.

 

Working Conditions:  May work in unpredictable home environments that may include wide variations in cleanliness, temperature, behaviors, smoke, animals, and other potential hazards. Required to drive a car in all types of weather.

 

Physical Requirements:   Constantly see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear.  Frequently stand, sit, walk, reach, push/pull, bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch, taste/smell, lift/carry 1 to 50+ lbs.
